Cycling Hokkaido Style

Road cycling in Hokkaido offers both newbies and advanced riders an experience hard to find anywhere else in Asia.

Over the past 8 years in Niseko, road cycling has become increasingly popular and more recently a growing number of Japanese and international tourists are flocking to Niseko and the rest of Hokkaido to take advantage of the almost perfect road cycling conditions.

Starting now until the first snow fall in late October, it is hard to miss the brightly coloured lycra clad cyclists battling the Niseko terrain and taking in the breathtaking summer scenery.

If your into short and steep hill rides or cruisy scenic riding the Niseko area and surrounds have something for everyone and for those that are looking for more challenging, competitive riding then we have a fair share of races. The newly UCI affiliated Boardman Niseko Classic in July offers a 70 and 140km race and the Hanazono Hill Climb in August will put those legs to the test. For those who prefer to watch from the side lines these events offer loads more than just cycling.

If, like me, you have not yet committed to lycra and are happy to peddle around taking in the sights and sounds then renting a bicycle or taking a tour that is tailored to your fitness level is the way to go and there are loads of great options from a few hours to 7 night packages.

It is easy to see why Niseko is fast becoming a cycling mecca but don't take my word for it
